Using counterfeit money is a crime that can be punished with a fine and imprisonment of up to 12 years. Therefore, if a person intends to pay with a bill, it is important to check it before completing the transaction. This helps avoid committing a crime if the bill is indeed counterfeit. If the bill is found to be fake, it should be taken to a bank, explaining what happened.
The bank will take the necessary steps by sending the bill to the appropriate authority, which will examine it and ensure that it is no longer in circulation.
The Bank of Mexico advises on what to do in these cases:
“Do not put it back into circulation, as this constitutes a crime punishable by a fine and up to 12 years in prison; do not destroy it or keep it. Take it to a bank branch so they can send it free of charge to the Bank of Mexico for analysis. You can also deliver it directly at the public service windows of the Bank of Mexico.”
