Article 342 of the Penal Code: Anyone who intentionally commits any act of mistreatment or cruelty against an animal shall be punished with imprisonment from 3 months to 2 years and a fine of 50 times the daily value of the current Unit of Measurement and Update.
Acts of animal mistreatment include:
I. Causing the unjustified death of an animal.
II. Torture, sadism (enjoying humiliating or harming), zoophilia (sexual relations between humans and animals), or any act that causes suffering to animals.
III. Any form of mutilation.
IV. Injuries that endanger an animal’s life.
V. Administering or giving toxic substances that cause harm.
VI. Provoking animals to attack each other.
