According to the Federal Law of Firearms and Explosives in Mexico, there are specific calibers permitted for the possession and carrying of firearms. Below is information regarding the allowed calibers:
For home protection:
Registration of handguns (pistols and revolvers) is authorized for calibers not exceeding 0.380″ or .38 Special.
Calibers like .38 Super, .357 Magnum, 5.7 mm, or others considered exclusively for military use by the Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA) are not permitted.
For protection of farmland or ejidos:
Registration of long guns (carbines, rifles, and shotguns) is allowed in calibers such as .22″, 12 GA, 16 GA, 20, 28, and 410.
Shotguns must not have a barrel length shorter than 635 mm (25″), and calibers larger than 12 (.729″ or 18.5 mm) are prohibited.
For hunting and sport shooting:
Registration of long and short firearms is permitted for sporting or hunting purposes.
The applicant must have a valid membership credential from a hunting or shooting club.
For collectors:
Registration of firearms for a collection is allowed strictly for exhibition purposes.
A collector’s permit must be obtained from the Secretary of National Defense.
For carrying firearms:
Firearms of allowed calibers and characteristics can be carried under the protection of a Personal Individual License for Firearm Carrying.
The necessity for carrying must be justified and evaluated by the Secretary of National Defense.
It is important to consult current legislation and meet all the necessary requirements for firearm possession and carrying in Mexico. Feel free to ask if you have further questions.
