The crime of abuse of authority carries a penalty of 2 to 9 years in prison and up to 400 days’ worth of fines.
Some very common cases include the following:
I. When public force is used to prevent the enforcement of a law, decree, regulation, etc.
II. When, while carrying out their duties, violence is inflicted on a person without reason, or when they insult or deprive someone of their freedom.
III. When they deny or delay individuals the protection or service they are obligated to provide.
IV. When they refuse to render assistance, if they are in charge of a public force.
V. When they abuse their power to obtain money or valuables for their personal gain.
VI. Forcing the accused to testify using intimidation, torture, etc.
These types of crimes are quite common, as public officials regularly commit them against citizens.
