I committed a crime in Mexico and fled to the U.S. — Can I be arrested?

1. Arrest warrant and extradition
• If Mexico issued an arrest warrant and requested an Interpol alert, you could be detained in the U.S.
• Mexico and the U.S. have an extradition treaty, so if the offense is serious (homicide, kidnapping, drug trafficking, corruption, etc.), U.S. authorities could arrest you and extradite you.

2. Cooperation between authorities
• If Mexico requests your extradition and the U.S. approves it, you will be arrested and brought to trial in Mexico.
• If the offense is minor, it is less likely that the U.S. will carry out an extradition, but you could still be deported.

In these cases, my recommendation is to seek a criminal defense attorney who can provide you with proper legal advice.
