What is the difference between homicide and femicide?

The difference between homicide and femicide lies in the context and the motivations behind the crime.

Homicide: It is the act of killing another person, regardless of gender or the motivation behind the crime. It can be classified as intentional homicide (when there is intent to kill) or negligent homicide (when death occurs due to negligence or recklessness).

Femicide: This is a specific type of homicide, where the victim is a woman and the killing occurs because of her gender. Femicide not only involves the act of killing but also takes into account the context of gender-based violence, where there is a pattern of abuse, discrimination, or unequal treatment towards women. This is often reflected in extreme violence, such as domestic violence, harassment, or contempt for the lives of women.

In summary: while homicide is a general term that refers to the killing of any person, femicide refers specifically to the killing of a woman for gender-related reasons, connected to inequalities and structural violence against women.
